SCEEN meets Phlow, Vol. 1

The Netaudio Classics (Soundtrack for SCEEN issue #2)

Pheek

(mo.)

Canadian Pheek is one of the most commited and versed netaudio-artists when it comes to minimal - dub - house. With a remarkable back catalogue at numerous netlabels such as CleverMusic.net, Epsilonlab.com, Thinner.cc and Archipel.cc the producer looks back on futuristic music publications. Pheek’s productions are comprised of tracks, whose undertow power is particularly created from wilful samples and rhythms. With a steady glimpse at dancing feet and the future, Pheek enriches every minimal-set. (mo.)

Martin Donath

(mo.)

The young musician Martin Donath is piloting, mutually with the musician Lomov, one of Germany’s leading netlabels for danceable techno/ house as well as ambient productions: Stadtgruenlabel.net. As a producer Martin Donath holds a fantastic sense of warmhearted and minimized TechHouse productions. His live sets with mellow and deep minimal-tracks conjure a smile upon the faces of listeners and dancers. With »Soleil Levant« he managed to create one of the most beautiful netaudio tunes of the past years. Deep, reflective and swinging easefully within itself. (mo.)

Selfish

(mo.)

Endrew Eigus aka Selfish also belongs to the upper squad of netaudio artists. His sound is earmarked by a lightly poignant melancholy. Thereby the Latvia based sound designer floats between ambient and easy 4 - to - the- floor beats. The musician, living in Riga, augments the intensity and deepness of his productions with self-made recordings of his surroundings. In his hands, electronic music gets a romantic and gentle character. No wonder, a barrel of soul resonates with those bits and bytes. (mo.)

Paul Keeley

I can’t stop« eindrucksvoll. (mo.)

Paul Keeley is not only responsible for the mastering at Epsilonlab, the Canadian #1 net label, but also makes the first-row-girls dance. With his amazing live set »Live @ Elektra, QC« he scoops us lovers of modern house music a blueprint under the sneakers, that is highly enjoyable. Thereby the Canadian loves it to weave in finely selected vocal snippets into his shuffled beats. How that works, instead of getting lost like Akufen in snippet funk, shows »I can’t stop« strikingly. (mo.)

Dataman

(mo.)

It astonishes, that many netlabel operators are musicians themselves, and are forming up into mutual collectives. Andreas Seibel, aka Dataman, is no exception at all. Yet he does not only concentrate on his own label Legoego.de, but also spreads his often dreary-paranoid stomps worldwide upon hot netlabels such as Minus-N.com, Stadtgruenlabel.net or Subsource.de. In doing so the programmer loves it to design headstrong rhythmics, that slightly work against each other and thereby create a charismatic techno swing. Dataman is deep, dark and definitely funky. (mo.)

Comfort Fit

(mo.)

Boris Mezga is my favourite toy when it comes to netaudio, because the cuddly Comfort Fit constructs HipHop breaks, that astonish every beat tinkerer and makes them jealous. The exceptional producer thereby merges his early influences of the minimal-house scene with an unmistakable sense of Jazz and R’n’B aesthetics. By means of worldwide cooperations Comfort Fit transports the raps of verbal acrobats such as Blaktronics or Mercury Waters on his future beats. But even if the sounds and complex HipHop instrumentals are standing on their own, without vocals, they rock the heart of every head banger. (mo.)

(mo.)

Benjamin Fay from Switzerland and Bochum - based Joerg Schuster belong to the blockbusters of the dubtechno-netlabel Thinner.c.c. Both artists developed an unique trademark sound and love making experiments. While Joerg Schuster, with his three projects lufth, digitalverein und sensual physics, primarily cultivates crackling dub-electronica of various facets, in the style of the early productions of Pole, Benfay has been specialising in danceable beats or ambient throughout the past. The digitalverein- Remix of Benfay’s superb ambient track »Plötzliche Kühle« (»sudden chill«) condenses the work of both artists in an amazing way. (mo.)

Sudio

(mo.)

Sudio’s productions are like a gaze in the future. Under the microscope of a scientist, and that is Daniel Chamrad in his daily routine, he composes and produces futuristic electronic music caught between all kinds of chairs. With great curiosity the music lover observes new music tools and is mesmerised by their impact on his tracks. In this process Sudio conflates the most varying genres around 130 beats per minute. His fusion of techno, house, electro and lowered sub basses can be felt at its best in his release »Live @ Evoke«. The musician, that is to say, interweaves umpteen loops, chases them through the filters and gets the puppets dancing to his electronic hi-tech-jazz, which is no Jazz. »Riding the String« was re-mixed and re-mastered for this compilation and is definitely the hit- track of his first netlabel release, signed by ideology.de. (mo.)

Turnus

(hs)

Some more secret information, but definitely on his way to the first netaudio-league is Nikolas Engelhard. As Turnus he knots poignantly floating electronica-carpets with love for the detail and the courage for getting an earful of it. Always with a keen sense of comfortingly warm arches of melody, somewhere between shuffling downbeats and subtle LoFi- crunching. With aerotone.net he picked the matching platform for that, as its motto reads »netlabel for beautiful music«. We agree!

Bad Loop

(hs)

The fact that Bad Loop is gladly booked for festivals, is hardly surprising. The man in his twenties from Finland is contrived only too well to get the dancing feet going and swinging, with his refreshing mix of playfully euphoric synthie- melodies, pressing bass lines and luscious flicking beats. But indeed, in between Petteri Karjalalainen does go for a trip to the ambient storehouse again and again. It’s too bad, his netlabel- output (among others for One and Kahvi) is rather manageable yet.

Esem

(hs)

George Marinov aka Esem is a frisky sound aesthete and a meticulous scientist at the same time. Within the boundaries of the IDM genre the Bulgarian fathoms all sound angles thoroughly and works his finds into his songs with a sure taste for style. Layer by layer the sound compresses that way to a very own, unique construct. His last record published on Kahvi, »Scateren«, reflects the Esem - spectrum delightfully. »Microessen« (»microdinner«) is sure one of its highlights.

Supine

(hs)

Less is more - which in many cases is tride, regarding the songs of Norwegian Otto Totland however provides an incredibly high charm factor. Namely he, alias Supine, focuses entirely intentional on a sparingly instrumentation and reduction. That way, an open gentleness, which can be hardly eluded, arises from his relaxed, unadorned tracks between ambient and downbeat. Let’s just hope, that Supine soon again has got new material for his own label Miasmah. [translated by rs] :)
